Marc Kadella is back and he has a new client. His antagonist on the Hennepin County bench, Judge Gordon Prentiss, has been accused of a murder. Despite his lack of respect for Marc, Prentiss wants him to represent him because he is innocent and knows Marc will fight hard for him. Marc's initial reaction is to let Prentiss have whatever he gets, but he becomes convinced that the judge is in fact innocent so he agrees to take the case. A criminal defense lawyer does not have to like his client. In fact, they rarely do. Fighting for the judge's life, Marc and his investigators, the beautiful and deadly Maddy Rivers and the street wise ex-cop, Tony Carvelli, uncover a criminal organization that is corrupting the entire community, including Gordon Prentiss. When it looks like Prentiss will get out from under it, he is framed for the murder. Except the gangster that Marc believes is responsible is an asset of the federal government and is totally protected no matter what he does including drug dealing, gambling, prostitution and even murder. The gangster makes a huge mistake when he crosses paths with the matriarch of a very wealthy and connected family. A mistake he will come to regret, because even the feds cannot protect him from her.

Desperate Justice Marc Kadella Legal Mysteries Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Dennis Carstens Randal Schaffer Books

I admit I am hooked on Dennis Carstens stories! Before retirement, I spent my entire career working with law enforcement officers, judges & lawyers within the legal system. And I am an avid reader. No other author I have ever read can compare to this one when it comes to realistically spinning a great legal thriller. He hooks you at the beginning & never lets go. He is phenomenal at describing the behind-the-scenes workings in the courtroom. I love the main character of Marc Kadella because his actions are real & he is easily relatable to the everyday lawyer. I also loved the character of Vivian Donahue...please bring her back!! And I love the twists that keep you guessing throughout his stories. And in this book, the quandary is that while the reader knows the defendant is not guilty, should he really be convicted of a crime he did not commit? If you haven't read Carstens yet, you're in for a real treat....the only negative is that you can't put it down & you'll lose a lot of sleep!! Great job again!

Desperate Justice Marc Kadella Legal Mysteries Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Dennis Carstens Randal Schaffer Books Reviews

I really liked the story in this book. It needs some editing, but only for some missed typos. I would normally give this book at least four and maybe five stars. However, there was an under current of a political agenda I could not get past. It diminished my enjoyment. It was not the obvious conservative bent of all the "likable" characters, but the dismissive way even the mention of a progressive was handled. For all the self righteousness of the protagonist, Marc, he was actually very shallow. Instead of trying to put forward personal political positions, this author could use his talent to educate and suggest change within a criminal justice system badly in need of reform. The best novels make you reach into your own mind for growth; they don't plant an author's agenda there.
This was one of the best novels I have read. It is a novel, and some of the things that took place are probably far fetched for real life. There are many characters, all very well defined. There are several things going on at the same time, so it was exciting when they all came together for the conclusion. There are several twists and turns, so you really do not get to the end of the story, until you get to the end of the story!!

Towards the end, there seemed to be a few proofreading/editing mistakes. Gender pronouns were mixed up, punctuation was lost at least one point, and even characters were mixed up on one or two occasions. I was following what and who very carefully - I do some proofreading and editing, so this sort of stuff jumps out at me. It was a good read anyway, and I highly recommend it.
This is the author's second book and it is very good.

The story is interesting, with a few plot twists.

As a lawyer, now judge I found the courtroom stuff pretty realistic. As a graduate of the Minnesota Law school (long ago), I hope that the pervasive corruption is not accurate but the story is well done in any event.

I especially liked the author's quick transitions, very well handled.

Unlike the first book, there is much more to the story development and less to the development of the lead characters. That is understandable.. Not a criticism at all. I really liked both the book and the development of the author.
Desperate Justice is another good Marc Kadella legal thriller. As usual Mr. Carstens has more than one storyline going which adds to the interest of what would otherwise have been a mundane plot line. My only serious complaint is that Carstens has too many characters and it is hard to remember who is who. While the final judgment that was rendered by the jury may have been inaccurate for the particular crime, it may be a perfect rendering for the client.

I was a bit confused as it appeared there were originally 2 murderers and wasn't quite certain what Carstens was thinking as he didn't flesh this part of the novel out. A pro was hired to do a killing, yet a woman testifies it was a suicide and she has proof. So what really happened with the professional hit? Carstens always manages to flesh out his main characters, add new ones with interesting roles, I just wish he wouldn't add so many that are peripheral to the main storyline. This would help to keep the reader on point and remove the confusion caused in my earlier statement regarding who actually killed who.

Marc is making quite a name for himself as a criminal lawyer and the cases are always convoluted but interesting. Carstens is not the best writer but he has interesting stories and this one leaves the reader with a moral dilemma regarding the jury's findings and the guilt of the convicted. Something to ponder. Since I enjoy legal thrillers I will continue to read Carstens and hope his writing improves with each new novel.
I liked Key to Justice but this book was disappointing. The sex scenes were unnecessary. Most of his readers, as I, are reading this for the legal story and how court cases are handled. Sounds like someone suggested he put some heavy sex in the book so he did. Enough already. Also tiresome to read every time Maddy comes on the scene, everyone stops and checks her out. No one could possibly cause so much attention. The elderly patriarch of the family was another one who was constantly attracting the male as well as Gabriella giving news reports. An editor should check Carstan's over-the-top descriptions of all these women, including his judge lover. US Government involvement hopefully contrived. For whatever reasons, hard to believe they would allow all they did. and for weak reason. Who actually committed the murder, if there was one, is a bit confusing. Some spelling errors and I can't imagine why. Also Mark not Marc in some places. Why? No proofreader? Not sure I will read book 3.
