This book explains in a down to earth fashion why most combat veterans feel and act the way they do. Dr. Freund discusses everything from anger to emotional detachment to nightmares to hypervigilance. She also uses the photographs to demonstrate the universal and natural reactions most people who have been through war experience. This book explains why combat veterans usually avoid crowds or lines, why they get so angry while driving in traffic, why their family members often describe them as emotionally distant, the purpose of nightmares, flashbacks, anniversary reactions, grief, and much more. Most war veterans don't talk about their experiences so many think they are the only one who feels or thinks this way. It's time to break the silence and talk about the cost of war to the individual warriors and their families. You owe it to yourself and your family to buy this book!

This is an outstanding book for warriors and their families. It is written in plain language, not clinical talk. However, it covers the clinical issues well without scaring off the victim of PTSD, etc. It is also useful for clinicians who have little experience with warfare to be able to assist their clients. Additionally, it is useful in general for anyone suffering with PTSD, depression, anxiety, as a result of an experience that leaves permanent scars on the psyche. It doesn't matter if the experience happened yesterday or 20 years ago. I HIGHLY recommend it to my fellow clinicians as well as warriors. Alice Stratton, LCSWProduct details

Taming The Fire Within Life After War edition by Anne Freund SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
Easy reading and a wonderful way of understanding PTSD
good read!
Ms. Freund describes the behavior of someone suffering from PTSD as though she was a fly on the wall in my son's home. Her explanations of WHY PTSD occurs is helpful to family and friends; you realize this is not a hypochondriac that has returned from was, this is an injured person in body, soul, and mind.
Dr Freund understands how to educate combat soldiers. We need more professionals that can help these men & women - and their families - find their way thru combat trauma and its aftermath. The photos in the book prove that "a picture is worth a thousand words". Making combat trauma "normal" goes a long way in decreasing the power of the emotions. NGB
Reading this book has given me a whole new appreciation for our armed forces and those of other countries. Dr. Freund does an excellent job of making a subject area that is often treated very clinically very readable and understandable. I was moved to tears on multiple occasions while reading this book and as a result have developed a passion for the issues surrounding veterans and their families. Must-read for anyone who has been in combat, has a family member who has been to war or simply wants to better understand what veterans go through.
This is a very helpfulbook for helping heal the aftermath of the Vietnam war.
